What cover letter tools actually cost in 2026

A year of a cover letter tool costs between about $71 and about $320 in 2026, and at two of the nine the plan the page steers you toward costs over four times the plan that is actually cheapest. This page lists nine options, what each one charges, and what a year of it comes to on the cheapest plan the vendor advertises. We sell one of them. Sorting our own row by that same rule puts us eighth of nine, and we have left it there, because a comparison that quietly ranks its author first is not worth reading.

The short answer

The plan you are shown is rarely the plan that is cheapest

4.7x

What Zety's Most Popular plan costs against its own annual plan over a year: $337.35 versus $71.40. CoverLetterNow runs the same gap at 4.4 times.

13 charges

What a 4-week billing cycle produces in a year, not 12. Two of the nine bill this way, and it is the most common reason a year costs more than expected.

The comparison

What nine cover letter tools charge

Ordered by the cheapest annual plan each vendor advertises, cheapest first, with our own row placed by that same rule. Where a vendor steers you toward a costlier plan than its cheapest one, the note says so and gives both numbers. Every figure was read on the vendor's own live pricing page on July 28, 2026, and prices in this category change often, so check before you buy.

Annual figures convert each product's own billing cycle to one year: 12 charges for monthly plans, 13 for 4-week plans, just over 4 for a 90-day plan, and the single charge for pay-once products. Where a vendor sells several plans, the cheapest is used for every vendor alike, including us.

How they charge

The three pricing models, and how to compare them

Comparing sticker prices in this category gives you the wrong answer, because the products do not bill on the same clock. Convert everything to a year first.

Monthly subscription

The common model. You are charged 12 times a year and can usually cancel any time. Annual plans in this group cut the price sharply, often by half or more, in exchange for paying up front. Watch for vendors that bill in fixed day counts instead of calendar months, because a 30-day cycle produces slightly more than 12 charges a year.

Cheap trial into 4-week auto-renewal

A low trial price, usually two or three dollars for 14 days, that renews at a much higher rate every 4 weeks. Because a year holds 13 four-week periods rather than 12 months, this quietly costs one extra charge a year compared with the same price billed monthly. Both vendors using this model also sell a far cheaper annual plan on the same page.

Pay once

A single charge for either a fixed window of access or lifetime access, with no recurring billing. Cheapest if your search is short or you only need the tool occasionally, and the model to look for if you do not want to remember to cancel.

The 4-week arithmetic, done

A year holds 13 four-week periods, so these two collect 13 charges where a monthly plan collects 12. Both also sell a far cheaper annual plan on the very same page, which is the part worth knowing before you take the trial.

  • Zety: $71.40 on the Annual Package. The trial plan its own page marks Most Popular renews at $25.95 every 4 weeks, which is 13 charges and $337.35 a year, or 4.7 times the annual price.
  • CoverLetterNow and LiveCareer: $71.40 on the annual plan. The trial plan its page marks Popular renews at $23.95 every 4 weeks, which is 13 charges and $311.35 a year, or 4.4 times the annual price.

Free tiers

What free gets you, tool by tool

Most of these products have a free tier, but the limit sits in a different place on each one, and that is usually the thing that decides whether free is actually usable for you.

Zety: Free Basic package, but downloads are TXT format only

CoverLetterNow and LiveCareer: Free Basic access, but downloads are TXT format only

Kickresume: Unlimited basic downloads; students free via ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS

ChatGPT and other general chatbots: Yes, with limited messages and uploads

Novoresume: Free Basic plan, but it cannot produce a cover letter at all

Grammarly: 100 AI prompts a month

Rezi: One resume, one AI interview, and three PDF downloads

GenerateCoverLetter: Match score, gaps, and a preview of the letter, with no card

Teal: Free Forever tier, including 2 AI cover letter credits

Where we sit

What we charge, and what we are not

A Week Pass is $9, charged once, for seven days of unlimited letters, every tool, and every download. It does not renew. Unlimited is $19 for the first month and $24.99 a month after that, and it cancels in one click.

On a full year that is $293.89, which puts us eighth of the nine tools on this page. We do not sell an annual discount, so we have no cheaper plan to be measured on, while most of this table does. We are not going to sort around that. If a whole year of software is what you are buying, several options here cost less than we do and the table says which.

What the $9 pass does is let you finish an application without starting a subscription at all. It is the cheapest paid option here that has nothing to cancel. Two products undercut it up front, at $1.95 and $2.95 for 14 days, but both of those are trials that renew into $23.95 and $25.95 every four weeks unless you cancel in time. If you want the lowest number on the page and you are confident you will cancel, take one of those instead.

The part worth knowing before you pay anyone: our match score and the gaps it finds are free, with no card. You can see how your resume reads against a specific posting, and decide from there whether the letter is worth paying for. That is deliberate, because the thing this category is worst at is telling you whether an application is actually ready before you send it.

If annual cost is the only thing that matters to you, the cheapest year on this page is Zety at $71.40, and the number is the number. Worth reading the note beside it first, because at that vendor the cheap plan is not the one the signup flow puts in front of you.

You can check your fit on a real posting before deciding whether any of this is worth paying for. The score and the gaps cost nothing.

Common questions

Cover letter tool pricing, answered

What are the current pricing options for cover letter tools in 2026?

A full year ranges from about $71 to about $320 depending on the tool and the plan you pick. The cheapest annual plans are $71.40 at Zety and CoverLetterNow and $76.80 at Kickresume. General assistants like ChatGPT start at $8 a month. Pay-once options run $139.99 for a year at Novoresume and $149 for lifetime access at Rezi. Month-to-month rates are much higher, typically $12 to $29 a month, and the trial-based products renew at $23.95 to $25.95 every four weeks. One-time passes also exist, such as our own $9 Week Pass.

How do the options compare on cost and value?

Compare the cheapest annual plan rather than the sticker price, because the same product can cost several times more depending on which plan you choose. Zety's annual plan is $71.40, but the plan its own page marks Most Popular renews at $25.95 every four weeks, which is 13 charges and $337.35 a year, roughly 4.7 times as much. Then check what the free tier actually produces: two of these export plain text only, and one cannot generate a cover letter at all without paying. For a single application the lowest prices on the page are the $1.95 and $2.95 fourteen-day trials, but both renew into four-week billing unless you cancel; the cheapest paid option with nothing to cancel is a one-time pass, and several free tiers cost nothing at all if their limits suit you.

Is there a free cover letter generator that actually works?

Free tiers exist but they differ in where the limit sits. Zety and CoverLetterNow both let you build for free but restrict downloads to TXT format, which strips your formatting. Novoresume excludes cover letters from its free plan entirely. Kickresume allows unlimited basic downloads, and Teal includes two AI cover letter credits. On our own tool the match score, the gaps it finds, and a preview of the letter are free with no card, and payment unlocks the full letter, the editing tools, and the downloads.

Why do some cover letter tools bill every four weeks instead of monthly?

A four-week cycle produces 13 charges in a year rather than 12, so the same headline price collects roughly an extra month of revenue annually. It also makes the price look smaller next to a monthly competitor. It is legal and disclosed, but it is the single most common reason people are surprised by what these tools cost them over a year, and at both vendors that use it the four-week plan is the one the page steers you toward.

What does GenerateCoverLetter cost?

A $9 Week Pass gives seven days of unlimited letters, every tool, and every download as a single charge that never renews. Unlimited is $19 for the first month and $24.99 a month after that, and you can cancel in one click. We do not sell an annual discount, so a full year is $293.89, which is near the top of this table rather than the bottom. The match score and the gaps it finds are free before you pay anything.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure on this page was read on the vendor's own live pricing page on July 28, 2026. An earlier version of this table had to mark Teal, Zety and CoverLetterNow as corroborated from secondary sources because those sites block automated requests; this scan reached all three directly, so the whole table is now first-hand.

Annual figures are our arithmetic on each vendor's stated cycle: 12 charges for monthly plans, 13 for 4-week plans, just over 4 for a 90-day plan, and the single charge for pay-once products. Where a vendor sells several plans we use the cheapest, applied to every vendor alike including ourselves, and the note beside each row gives the costlier plan where the vendor steers toward one. Promotional rates are flagged in the notes and usually revert on renewal.

We sell one of the products listed here, so read this with that in mind. We have put our own pricing in the same table, ordered by the same rule, and named a competitor as cheaper where it is.
